She felt lately as though she had served her purpose, done her job, and been dispensed with, not only by her children, but by her husband as well.

About This Quote

Margaret Atwood has said of her novel The Handmaid’s Tale that it was written for the women who are “left behind.” The book was inspired by the story of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, whose 1968 book On Death and Dying became a bestseller after she coined the phrase “five stages of grief.” Kubler-Ross described five stages of grief that people experience after losing a loved one. These stages are denial, sadness, anger, bargaining, and depression. The first two are natural responses to loss. Acceptance comes next, followed by bargaining with the person who has died to be reunited with them in some other form. Depression is perhaps the hardest stage to endure because it brings on feelings of guilt and regret for having lived life without the person who has died.
